I always love to use lesson plans that revolve around the holidays if possible! At my school we do not celebrate Christmas with a party, but I always try to find a few fun academic activities that go along with the season. I love reading Diary of a Worm/Diary of a Spider to kids big and small. I also love reading their writing when they are asked to author a book following the same pattern and my students always ask for more creative writing assignments like this one! This 24 page file includes directions for this lesson, 4 options of book covers, a planning sheet, diary pages for writing and drawings, and 2 options for back covers. I have included instructions in the document, but please feel free to adapt this activity to fit the needs of your students! Enjoy!
P.S. I made this activity to use for sub plans. It is very convenient on sick days to quickly put this activity into sub plans when you aren't feeling great! Plus it is very easy for a sub to teach!
I have also included the following sub instructions too if you do use these plans for while you are away and then you can just leave the page of directions for the sub.
Read the story Diary of a Worm/Diary of a Spider to the students. Read with expression and ask the students questions about the story as you read. Make connections to how the captions and speech bubbles provide extra details about the story.
Then pass out the Diary of a Reindeer planning sheets. Inform students that today they will begin writing their own Diary of a Reindeer story from the perspective of a reindeer. Ask the students if they have any questions before they begin to plan. Allow the students to plan for 5-10 minutes. Remind them to have fun and be creative! Then allow them 5 minutes to find a partner to discuss their ideas and plan with before they begin.
After the planning and partner talk are complete pass out the remainder of the Diary of a Reindeer sheets. Circulate and assist as students are writing. Point out the strengths in their writing!
When students finish writing instruct them to reread their work and make any necessary revisions or edits. Collect papers as students finish.
