Students love the chance to use their creativity with this assignment. In the process, they also become thoroughly familiar with the content.
Students take on the persona of a soldier serving under George Washington in the American Revolution. They see major events firsthand, including the creation of the Continental Army, the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Battle of Trenton, the encampment at Valley Forge, and the surrender at Yorktown, among others. Throughout the experience, they will keep a journal.
The assignment requires students to include key names, dates, and place, which will reinforce their retention of the facts. They will also exercise higher level thinking by evaluating the events to give their personal reactions to them.
This assignment can be used in class or assigned as homework. It can also be used as enrichment in individualized instruction, or as extra credit.
