This is an activity created by Dione relating to the use of a Dichotomous Key to classify six types of beans - Green Split Pea, Black, Kidney, Pinto, Baby Lima, and Black Eyed. An example of each of the beans is placed in a sealed plastic bag and is numbered from one to six with each bag having a different number.
For this activity, the students work in cooperative groups to first create a data chart for the different characteristics relating to the beans such as length, color, shape, and texture. These characteristics will be used to help identify each of the beans using the Dichotomous key.
The goal is for the students to design a dichotomous key that corresponds with the beans and the bean data chart. You should be able to use the key to identify each of the six beans without any errors.
This is a great activity because it has the students working together cooperatively. The students really have to use critical thinking and higher order process skills to ensure that their dichotomous key will work for all six beans.
