This is a PowerPoint activity that helps students get better at using guide words to locate words in reference books, particularly the dictionary.
An animal appears on the screen with the appropriate number of blanks for the name of the animal. Students then take off through the dictionary, using proper guide word practices to find the word in the Dictionary. When a student finds the word they point to the word with one hand and raise their other hand.
When 1/2 of the hands are up, allow a different student each time to give the students still looking the page they found the word on. Once everyone is on the same page, move to the next slide where the picture, word, page number, and guide words will be displayed and allow the 'clue giver' to discuss the guide words and how the word found fits between them.
After a few pictures, students get SERIOUS about finding the word quickly so they can raise their hand and give a clue. All the while they are building their skill set for finding information quickly.
My students LOVE this game. When they see the dictionaries on the tables in the Media Center they get hyped up.
