This lesson was created for my most recent observation in 6th grade, but can be easily adapted for the Common Core Standard on Dictionary in each grade level (grades 5 to 10).
The lesson plans includes the PowerPoint, lesson plan, worksheets, and more.
The lesson plan includes an Essential Question, Teaching Strategies (that include class participation, paired activity and an individual worksheet) plus an Exit Ticket.
Common Core Standards addressed include: CCSS.ELA-Literacy. L.5.4c L.6.4c L.7.4c L.8.4c L.9.4c L.10.4c Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning or its part of speech.
Both the PowerPoint and the worksheet are fully engaging (I knew I was going to be observed!). Students discuss the difference in pronunciation of "thigh" and "thy." (If you don't know the difference, it's included!), practice locating words with guide words on a dictionary page, write their name phonetically and much more.
The essential question is written enlarged on one page for display in the classroom.
You need to have dictionaries in the class to complete this lesson.
