This is a great activity to use with elementary students to help them get used to using a dictionary and understand all the ways it can be used. This 20-item list of "things to find in the dictionary" contains items designed to help students understand and use the following pieces of information that can be found in the dictionary: alphabetical order/spelling, guide words, number of syllables, parts of speech, multiple definitions for a single word, suffixes, plurals, and phonetic spelling/pronunciation.
This activity can be used either as an extension or enrichment activity for students who are advanced or have finished other work, or as a whole class activity that can be timed to see who finds the most items on the list.
I have actually used this QUIET activity as a game at a class party where students were competing to find all 20 items fastest and receive a prize. No headaches there!
It also works well as a back-to-school activity.
*This file contains a one-page pdf that students are given to record their answers for the dictionary scavenger hunt. Answers are NOT included, since they will differ based on the dictionary your classroom uses.
*Note: This product is most easily used when you have one dictionary available for each student (or group of students working together). As a teacher who would be checking their answers, it is definitely helpful if all students/groups have the same brand/edition of dictionary, just so everyone's answers will be consistent (although it would certainly be possible to use this activity in ways where this may not be as important).
