Dictionary Skills: Guide Words PART I

Teaching students about guide words can be really tricky! Need to help your students practice this difficult dictionary skill?! This pack includes three sets of word cards, all with vocabulary words that a second grade should know and be able to use by the end of the school year. Each set of words cards has four pairs of guide words and six words that go with each pair of guide words (for a total of 24 words cards in EACH set). Each set of cards is coded by the clipart kid, so they’re easily identifiable and won’t get mixed up. You can use these sets in many different ways. Two ideas are: As a literacy work station where the students sort the words under the appropriate guide word pair and record their answers on the recording sheet, or as a scoot around the room where the word cards are “hidden”. Kids take their recording sheet with them and when they find a word, they record it under the appropriate guide word pair. They can also be used for whole group lessons, small groups, and for intervention! Both the scoot and sort come with separate recording sheets for your students to use. Answer keys are also included!
