Vocabulary and Dictionary Skills! I think your students will enjoy these activities created to build academic and content vocabulary as well as practice dictionary skills.
Detectionary! Groups of 4-6 students use a dictionary to try and “stump” each other using unfamiliar words. My students absolutely love this game!
Dictionary Detective & Diving Into the Dictionary are organizers/recording sheets used to introduce and study new words. Pronunciation, parts of speech, guide words, and picture associations will make those words stick! All you have to do is provide your content words! All subjects welcomed!
3 Dictionary Scavenger Hunts will encourage your students to “dig deep” into the dictionary. Great for whole groups, early finishers, and literacy centers.
Fun with Favorites is always a hit! First you record the guide words for each of your favorites. Then trade papers with a friend, who will use the guide words to locate the page and record your favorite.
What are best practices for teaching vocabulary words?
I am including a resource sheet that lists the ones I have found to be the most effective over the years.
Give your students a word to look up in their dictionaries. Challenge them to use both guide words on that page in one sentence. Encourage students to be as creative as possible!
