Great beginner reading poem (with pictures to help beginning readers). NOTE: poem is sang or read to the tune of "If you're happy and you know it". I start off putting poem on sentence strips and reading whole group as a class. We find the sight words too and practice orally using the sight words in sentences. You can write different rhyming words on index cards to then insert into the poem (if you're using sentence strip and a pocket chart).
LITERACY CENTER IDEAS: Then I give this poem to students to go into their poetry or reading journal. Students then have to find the sight words we discussed (circling or underling with a yellow crayon). They also have to draw a picture to go with the poem in their journal, and finally they of course practice reading independently or to a friend.
You may also have students practice mixing up and putting the sentence strips (poem) back in order as a small group. Also you can put the poem on anchor chart paper, laminate, then have students read and find sight words with dry erase markers.
