These visuals help teachers of 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students identify the types of story problems we encounter in math and quickly address how to solve these problems using tape diagrams.
Students in my class use these posters in a variety of ways:
Centers-Students use these visuals to sort word problems into the three categories. After sorting the word problems, students are to solve them using tape diagrams on their dry erase boards.
Problem of the Day-After being introduced to our problem of the day, students use these process charts to determine which type of problem this is (what are we looking for: total, part, difference) and then are to solve explaining how they know which type of problem it is and how to solve it.
Writing their own story problems-Each day during stations, students are to select one type of story problem and write their own using their own ideas.
