I put together this activity when creating a Tiered Assignment for my Reading Endorsement. Activity can be altered for most any teaching unit that would involve conflict.
Duration: Two class periods
Learning Goals: For students to have a better, clearer, and more advanced understanding of conflict in life, reading and writing.
Key Concept: Conflict
Generalization: Identify conflict, create examples of conflict, and resolve conflict.
Background: Students have been learning about the six different types of conflict (person v. person, person v. fate, person v. society, person v. nature, person v. machine, person v. self) and how they are used in novels.
Preassessment: Students participated in a conflict discussion in class (observe knowledge), students complete a worksheet connecting conflict to their novel, Tuesdays With Morrie, and students take a conflict quiz.
Tiers: Based on these three results, students are placed in Tier 1 (basic understanding), Tier II (working knowledge), or Tier III (mastery).
Working Guidelines: Students have two class periods to complete the activity. They work in groups often within the classroom and are to observe our “Group Rules” that are posted in the room at all times. There are two activities, 1 and 2, Activity 1 is to be completed by the end of class period 1 and Activity 2 is to be completed by the end of class period 2.
Directions: Work cards on blue, green, and purple paper
Grades: Class participation grade, post test
Closure: Post test and conflict essay at the end of the novel, Tuesdays With Morrie.
