Do you want your students to be confident and capable mathematicians? I believe that for this to happen, students need to be equipped with a range of strategies, which they can add to their math tool belt. Column Addition should be one of them!
Teaching your students how to use the formal method of Column Addition is a fantastic strategy to equip them with. Particularly when they are ready to add larger numbers together and when they already have a good understanding of number and place value. These worksheets start off at the very beginning of understanding this strategy, by showing your students how to complete Column Addition in the 'expanded way' first. This is so that they understand the reasoning behind it before they move on to bigger numbers.
Currently I teach a class with VERY diverse abilities and I understand that there is not a ‘one size fits all’ worksheet. However, I have created these eight worksheets, with the intention that there is hopefully one for all the ability levels in your class (and also mine!). Students who need support will be taken right back to the very beginning of the strategy and supported with basic skills and number knowledge. Likewise, students who need to be challenged will be given a chance to apply the strategy though word problems. Detailed answers are also included.
I love this strategy and I love teaching it! I hope you and your class enjoy using this resource.
