Differentiated August ELA Centers

This pack was created to support beginning of the year, independent activities for the literacy block. This pack contains seven differentiated activities. However, counted individually, this pack has thirteen activities. Teachers can use the skills to differentiate for students by difficulty level, or can have students complete all levels of the task, so the centers last for several weeks and scaffold upon themselves. The centers include:
• Colorful Vowel Words- Students read word cards with one syllable short and long vowel words. Then, students sort the cards onto a short or long sound sorting mat. This center has two levels of difficulty. Version one has simpler words with more ‘magic e’ words for the long vowels. Version two has slightly more difficult words with some vowel teams for the long vowels (ee, ai, ui).
• Bubble Dot Decoding- Students practice decoding regularly spelled, two- syllable long vowel words, by drawing a card with a picture on it and then marking the answer sheet with the corresponding word with a bingo dauber.
• Order Up!- Students order 8 cards, with school lunch related words, in alphabetical order. There are two versions of this activity. The first activity has alphabetizing to the first letter. The second version has alphabetizing to the second letter.
• Be a Literary Reading Detective- Students read a literary passage and then can either answer questions about the passage, or can use question stem cards, to create and answer their own questions about the passage. There are three levels of the passage (Late 1st/ Early 2nd, Early 2nd , Early 2nd / Mid 2nd ) and two different versions of the recording sheet.
• Be an Informational Reading Detective- Students read an informational passage and then can either answer questions about the passage, or can use question stem cards, to create and answer their own questions about the passage. There are two levels of the passage (Late 1st/ Early 2nd,Early 2nd / Mid 2nd ) and two different versions of the recording sheet.
• Complete Sentences are a Hoot- Students draw cards with sentences and phrases on them and then sort them into complete or incomplete sentences. There are two different versions of this activity. The first is a simpler version and includes visual cues such as capital letters and end marks, for the complete sentences. The second version is more difficult and includes capital letters and end marks on EVERY card, some of which are used incorrectly.
• Sentence Sort- Students draw cards with sentences and match them to a card with the corresponding end mark. Then students sort all of the cards under the headers: statement, question, and exclamatory. There are two versions of the game. The first version has lower level sentences for easy reading, while the second version has higher level sentences.
• Sticking with Good Sentences- Students draw cards with sentences on them. The students then check the cards to see if it has a capital letter, end mark, and that it makes sense, to practice simple editing skills. There are three versions of this activity. In the first version, all the sentences are statements that are missing no more than two of the elements. In the second version, statement, exclamatory, and question sentences are represented, but are missing no more than two of the elements. In the third version, the same sentences from version two are used, but one sentence is missing ALL of the elements.

Differentiated September ELA Centers

This pack was created to support independent activities for the literacy block. It contains 9 differentiated activities that are slightly different than my other ELA tasks. Instead of creating one task with several different level of difficulty cards, the activities are differentiated by either the complexity of the recording sheet and task or by the actual readability of the task. I made this change to help teachers create meaningful, differentiated centers, but requiring less time to prepare and create! Another new feature I added to this pack is a printable resource poster for EACH center! The centers include:
• Swimming with Complete Sentences- The student will read the words on the card and match it onto a complete or incomplete sentence card. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students to identify complete or incomplete sentence. The second recording sheet (front and back) requires students to identify and correct incomplete sentences.
• Apple Endings- Students draw cards with sentences that do not have end marks and match the card to another card with the correct end mark. The first recording sheet requires students to write in the correct, missing punctuation. The second recording sheet requires students to cut and paste sentences into the correct type of sentence (interrogative, declarative, exclamatory, and imperative).
• Carnival Word Sorts- Students sort word cards as either nouns or verbs. The first recording sheet requires students to identify nouns and verbs. The second recording sheet just adds a back to the first recording sheet. It requires students to identify nouns and verbs, then use three of each in a sentence.
• Plural Noun Plays- Students sort words cards as singular nouns and plural nouns. The first recording sheet requires students to identify and write singular and plural nouns. The second recording sheet (front and back) requires students to identify singular and plural nouns and then use three of each in a sentence.
• Bubble Dot Decoding- Students practice decoding words with common vowel teams. They will select a picture card, then mark the correct word naming the picture on the recording sheet using a bingo dauber. There are two versions of the recording sheet. The first recording sheet only uses the first two pages of cards. The second recording sheet includes a third page of cards. These cards (eight, show, bread, a queen) are ODDBALL words and do not fit the pattern. Students will need to color in the bubbles with oddball words BLUE.
• Be a Literary Reading Detective- Students read a literary passage and then can either answer questions about the passage, or can use question stem cards, to create and answer their own questions about the passage. There are three levels of the passage (Late 1st, Early 2nd, Mid 2nd ) and two different versions of the recording sheet.
• Be an Informational Reading Detective- Students read an informational passage and then can either answer questions about the passage, or can use question stem cards, to create and answer their own questions about the passage. There are three levels of the passage (Late 1st, Early 2nd, Mid 2nd ) and two different versions of the recording sheet.
• Falling into Main Idea- Students read cards with passages on them and determine the main idea. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation. The first recording sheet requires students choose the main idea from a multiple choice bank. The second recording sheet requires students to write in the main idea.
• Main Idea Mishap- Students read cards with passages on them and determine the detail that does not belong. Two different recording sheets are included for differentiation.
