This Main Idea and Supporting Details Bundle offers no prep, common core aligned, easy to use differentiated activities for 4th through 6th grade. It contains my Finding the Main Idea and Supporting Details - Fiction Resource and my Finding the Main Idea and Supporting Details in Informational Text Resource. There is considerable research that says using analogies assists in concept development.  This product activates prior knowledge by providing an analogy between a chair with its supporting legs and the main idea and supporting details. Both products include a main idea warm-up activity to help students associate how a broad main idea relates to more specific ideas. The reading passages have three differentiated, printable worksheets for each passage. Set A has its own larger graphic organizer, separate from the passages and requires the students to read the passage, then write a main idea sentence on the chair seat. Next, they must find 4 supporting details and write a sentence for each on the chair legs. Set B asks the student to examine some given sentences about the passages and discriminate between a main idea, 4 details and one that doesn’t support the main idea. Set C provides the main idea and requires the student to find the correct 4 supporting details from a choice of five. ALL worksheets in the fiction bundle, also ask the students to think of an appropriate title and write it on the chair back. Sets B and C share a corresponding answer key for each passage, and Set A’s answers will vary . See previews for display options.

* Please note that both my Context Clues and Figurative Language and Character Trait Products use the same passages and make wonderful companion activities for this Main Idea Product. It works best to use the Context Clues and Figurative Language Resource before the other two to help with some of the more difficult vocabulary.
