This file contains lesson materials for teaching solving one-step equations involving addition and subtraction to three levels of mathematics ability in one class.
Objective: Students will be able to solve at least 3 equations for the variable, using an equation-solving template.
Procedure: After instructing how to use the additive inverse to solve for a variable, students will complete a handout of 8 word problems, requiring a template for solving the equation. There are three different template worksheets to help students of different abilities set up the word problems.
It is recommended that students post their work on the board and discuss how the additive inverse helps solve equations as closure.
