I created this packet to help my students with the sight words that are the focus of each week in the Reading Street 2013 series, but also with decoding and reading comprehension. Nearly all words on all pages of the mix and fixes are either sight words or decodable, beginning with CVC words in the early units, then moving on to words with blends, digraphs, and silent “e.” It also introduces a few of those sight words that they just need to know that are not in the series, like “play” and “can.” Each page is labelled in the top right corner for the unit and week it corresponds to. I included three mix and fix pages to go with each week in the 2013 Reading Street series. The first page for each week is what I would use for my “Beyond” group. They have to figure out what the sentence says just by unscrambling the mixed up words. The second page for each week is what I would use for my “On Level” group. It has the sentence written at the top, so they have to read it, then unscramble the words to match it. The third page for each week will be used for my “Approaching” or “Below” groups. Not only does it have the sentence at the top for them to match the words, but it also has the sentence written out in dotted letters so they can trace it to help with their handwriting and spacing. There are no pages for Unit 6, since that unit is all review. I intend to pull specific pages for specific students during Unit 6 that I know they need to practice. For example, if I know a student is still having difficulty with the word “what,” I may pull a different level of that page for him/her to do. Hopefully this will challenge your beyond group and provide the on level and approaching groups with the support they need as they work to learn those sight words!
