I love seeing students work toward a skill at their own level and pace. Differentiation is key to reaching all learners and I absolutely love how this approach is working in my classroom this year. I quickly get to assess, reteach, challenge, document, and direct learning paths for each student in my room. HOW???
We discuss the topic whole group and I show a couple of examples. Then we do a few practice problems whole group. This gives me a good idea of prior knowledge and how quickly they are picking up the the new material. From there, I circle the letter of the column that I want that student to work on in class. After the student completes the first 5 problems independently (or with help if needed), they come see me to check in. I reteach as necessary and then decide whether they go to the next 5 problems in that column OR if they do the first 5 problems in the next column. Again, they come to see me to check. From there, I assign their Homework again by circling the column they are to complete.
This system works beautifully, and I hope you enjoy the product! Please feel free to ask any questions! :)
