The reading passage is designed to focus on the four main functions of the skeletal system including structure, movement, the production of red blood cells, and protection.
Included are two pages of reading with guided questions off to the side with three different tiered worksheets to assess the functions of the skeletal system.
Since every teacher is told to differentiate, the assessment portion of the reading passage has two different ways to check for understanding. The first is a graphic organizer that is partially filled in where students are expected to fill in either fill in the particular function, the importance or meaning of the function, the organs involved, along with a drawing of those organs. The second assessment is more of question and answer style activity to review the functions of the skeletal system. The third activity gives a model of the skeletal system where students are expected to name the groups of bones and describe their function.
I suggest giving your lower performing students the first activity, your middle performing students the second activity, and your more advanced students the third activity. However, I know the importance of a good graphic organizer, so the last page after the key is the graphic organizer by itself for you to use as in class notes.
This is primarily used to supplement in class notes, but could be used for a sub plan or additional work for students not in class.
