In this activity, students create different mixtures and solutions out of easily found items. First, they must identify if the combination is a mixture or solution. Then, they must identify if the substances are soluble or insoluble. Next, they describe if the physical properties change or remain the same. Finally, they create a plan for separating.
I use this in my class as a concluding activity. Students don't actually make the mixtures or solutions, they visualize instead. Then, if they get the answer wrong, they are allowed to go back and create the mixture or solution.
