Diffusion is the passive movement of molecules from one area to another area, without the need for energy. When molecules move because of diffusion, we say that they diffuse. This movement is always from an area of high concentration (where there is a lot of that molecule) to an area of low concentration (where these is not a lot of that molecule) until the molecule is evenly distributed throughout the area. This idea of diffusion explains the movement of all types of things based on concentration within a material or solution, or even within your own body. This is same concept that explains why the powder drink mix will eventually spread through the entire glass of water. If you’d be willing to give it enough time to do so.
In this lab, you will test to see how changing the temperature of water will affect the rate at which water-soluble food dye will spread.
