PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Objective

In this activity, you will demonstrate osmosis and diffusion of molecules through a selectively permeable membrane. You will also determine which molecule(s) flow freely and which molecule(s) remain trapped in the dialysis tubing.

Essential Standards:

Bio Analyze the cell as a living system.

1.2.1 Compare the mechanisms of active vs. passive transport (diffusion and osmosis).

Learning Standards:

LO 2.10 The student is able to use representations and models to pose scientific questions about the properties of cell membranes and selective permeability based on molecular structure. [See SP 1.4, 3.1]

LO 2.11 The student is able to construct models that connect the movement of molecules across membranes with membrane structure and function.

Essential Questions:

Why do cells transport molecules in and out of their membranes?

What is the process of diffusion and osmosis in a selective permeable membrane?
