Introduce, or reintroduce, students to the idea of close reading with this short PowerPoint presentation which compares close reading to digging for artifacts on an archaeological site. Motivate students to take their time to read and re-read by demonstrating how the whole process works.
The slides, designed with middle-grade students in mind, demonstrate to students why they might need to read something two or three times and what they can do to get the most out of a text on each reading.
Use at the beginning of the year, or whenever students need a reminder.
