This is the 1st of 5 units in Digging Reading, a classroom curriculum for teaching reading comprehension strategies.
Unit 1: Having a Purpose and Recognizing Text Structure
Unit 1 establishes the foundation for the Digging Reading program. It is a one-week unit consisting of four lessons. Students are introduced to the archaeology theme as they develop their skills with two reading comprehension strategies: Having a Purpose and Recognizing Text Structure. All of the texts that students need for the unit are included in the Student Activity Book.

Full-color posters, all with an archaeology theme, provide visual reminders of the strategies and how to use them.

The transparencies are used to model the strategies, stimulate thinking, and gather class input.

The week of instruction ends with a quiz.
