Have your students read and analyze 9 notable poems by: Brewer, Taylor, Stevenson, MacDonald, Taylor, Field, Longfellow, Cowper, and Gould!

While children enjoy classic children’s poems, they will learn to read closely, identify vocabulary based on context clues, determine the proper way to construct sentences, find and understand words of wisdom, and develop understanding of vocabulary through analogies work. Students can work one passage and activity a week for a nine week period. Many children will be so enthusiastic as the excerpt that they will ask to go to the library so they can check out and read more poetry!

Growth in reading scores can occur rapidly when children get excited about quality literature and poetry!

1. Read the passage first, closely. On your own paper make notes about any questions you ask yourself as a good reader while you are reading. Make note of any important vocabulary words you notice.

2. Then work the follow-up page. Answer the questions in complete sentences on your own paper.

3. Complete the prompt or assignment at the end of each passage, on your own paper.

4. Label your paper well with what lesson it is, the date you worked on it, and the name of the poem.

5. Proofread and check over your work for accuracy and completion.
