Note Pages: Students have reading journals to glue note pages into. We read through the notes together and highlight key words. Students refer to this record of learning throughout the year.
Poem: Students have a poetry journal. Students cut the poem sheet in half and just glue the poem into their journal. We read and discuss together. Student then reread for fluency and expression during Reading Station time. They draw a “meaningful illustration” beside the poem. They work on the follow up and this is turned into me for a grade.
ABC Order WAR: There are 3 sets of this card game. I keep the sets separate and they only play one set at a time. This is played like regular WAR. The person whose word comes first in ABC order keeps the card. Visit my Youtube Channel to see students playing this game:
Guide Word Sorts: There are 2 sets of this activity. Students play with 3 or 4 players. Each player takes a Garage card. The car cards get placed spread out and faced down. Player one picks a card. They look at the word on the car to see if it fits between their two guide words in ABC order. If it does, they keep it. If it doesn’t, it gets placed back faced down again. First person to collect all three cards for their garage wins. Game is played the same way with the candy bags and candy cards.
Written Practice: I use these to assess students’ proficiency with ABC order and Guide Words.
