Materials included in this file:
4 pages of word family sorting
2 follow up printables
Have designed this for use in small group literacy centers or in whole group literacy to help in recognition and reinforcement in word families that by changing one sound or letter you can have a new word. This sort can be done whole group, small group or even as an independent center. I have included an answer key for self checking.
To complete the sort. In small Lay out the sand pails in a row you can place the shovels upside down and take turns turning them over and then reading the picture and putting them on the correct sand pail. For independent practice you could have the students place them in a pile upside down turning one over at a time and then saying the name of the picture and putting it on the correct sand pail.
For whole group sorting it would work great in a pocket chart and give each student a card and call them up to put the picture under the correct sand pail.
Word Families included:
-an family( pan, man, fan, van, can)
-at family (bat, cat, rat, hat)
-un family (run, sun, bun)
-ug family ( bug, mug, hug, jug, rug)
* Follow up activity:
The follow up activity that is included with this sorting activity is a cut and paste. Students are to cut out the picture sort them and glue them on the correct sand pail. I have this made into two different sheets one sheet is the –at & –ug families the other is the –an & -un families
I hope you enjoy this activity as much as my students do! Thanks for your support.
