### Description

The purpose of this activity is to have your students participate in a challenging, yet engaging math activity where they plan a Vacation of a Lifetime®. Students will choose a destination and then research online to determine expenses such as transportation, lodging, attractions, souvenirs, and meals. Students will submit their vacation proposal of total expenses to a fictional World Vacation Committee (WVC) for approval. If approved, the vacation is fully paid for up to \$10,000!

Students will be adding, subtracting, and possibly multiplying decimals (expenses) for this activity.

Included in this Resource:

• Teacher Tips & Resource Link (3-pages; PDF)
• Introductory Scenario (1-page; Google Slides™)
• My Expenses Helper (3-pages; Google Slides™)
• Vacation of a Lifetime Plan (5-pages; Google Slides™)
• Vacation of a Lifetime Example (5-pages; Google Slides™)
• Project Choices (1-page; Google Slides™)
• WVC Certificate (1-page; Google Slides™)
• Vacation Grading Rubric (1-page; Google Slides™)

Helpful Teacher Tips & Ideas:

• Read through these teacher tips and the rest of the documents so you know what your students will be asked to do.
• There are a lot of directions provided to your students. You will want to remind them to read ALL of the directions carefully.
• The essential math focus for this activity is adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals- but there is so much more. Students will also have to think critically and problem solve.
• Like what was stated before, your students will be choosing a destination for a dream vacation that they have won in a contest. However, students must plan their vacation and then submit it to the World Vacation Committee (WVC)- or you.
• Students will need to use online searches and then calculate their expenses (travel, lodging, attractions, souvenirs, and meals). Note: There may be some students who will need to search for a currency exchange if the money in their vacation area isn’t the same as what they use.
• This resource is set up to be used both at school or if a student (or your students) are away from school due to illness, school closure, vacation, etc.
• You will notice that there is a registered trademark (®) at the end of Vacation of a Lifetime. This is just for fun and doesn’t mean anything.

At School:

• Students can either work individually or with a partner for this Vacation of a Lifetime® activity - it’s up to you.
• Introduce the activity to your students by sharing the Introductory Scenario. This will provide some details about what they are asked to do. For some added engagement, find some fun videos online about interesting vacation destinations. Students can also dress up as vacationers (sunglasses, Hawaiian shirts, etc.) while they work on this.
• Once the activity has been introduced, students are ready to begin.

Away from School:

• As they are away from school, students will work individually on this Vacation of a Lifetime® activity.
• Inform your students that the Introductory Scenario will be the first document they will want to read. This will provide some details about what they are asked to do.
• Once the activity has been introduced, students are ready to begin.
