We've all seen the nonfiction text features mini-books with students cutting out text features from magazines and old textbooks. The problem is, it's hard to supply students with tangible content that includes all of the text features students are responsible for knowing, and with enough materials for ALL of your students.
This Digital Nonfiction Text Features Surgery Journal Project is based on that same activity as a Google Slides presentation. This project includes digital presentation slides with my link to a selection of ebooks on GetEpic! that allows students to have a much larger selection of nonfiction text choices with ALL of the text features they are responsible for learning and analyzing. You will download a teacher file with the link to the Google Slides presentation to assign to your students, including photos of my own class project in action.
For this project students will find and insert snapshots of text features including:
*table of contents
*maps, charts, tables, graphs
*bold print, colored print, italics, underlining
*diagrams and labels
For each text feature students answer two questions to show their understanding:
1. What is the purpose of this text feature?
2. How does this text feature add meaning to the text?
