Challenge your students with word sorts that get them reading and thinking about essential spelling patterns. This resource was designed to provide a variety of vowel pattern word sorts and word work activities from which you can choose to compliment your word work program. The beauty of these digital sorts is that students have to engage with each word to decide where in the sort it belongs. (See the preview for samples.)
So many times students rely on the way a word “looks” based on its spelling pattern when sorting. Sorting then becomes a passive activity. This resource provides rigor
because students can’t just rely on visual patterns to sort. They have to actively read, listen for that particular sound, and determine where in the word sort it goes based on the categories provided.
For patterns that do not have ‘oddballs,’ students sort by syllables.
