    Teacher Notes

    Each weekly writing resource contains a set of teacher notes. The teacher notes include a teaching plan for each of the three digital notebooks. The teaching plan is a suggested order for presenting the writing activities to your students. You can assign activities for each day of the week or provide students with all the activities they need for the entire week.

    The materials in the digital notebooks include:

    Writing Activities Checklist

    At the start of each level is a student learning path in the form of a checklist. Students click on the name of each writing activity to be taken to the appropriate Google Slides. When students finish each activity, they click on the green square and drag it in front of the writing activity.

    Journal Writing

    There are five digital journal writing Google Slides included for each level in this resource. Students complete one journal writing activity each day of the week. Level A is a single question for students to answer. Levels B and C contain target questions to help the students come up with ideas for their writing. Assign all your students the same journal prompt or give students a journal prompt based on their individual learning needs.

    Phonics Skills Activity

    Each week students complete a fun Google Slides activity on a specific phonics skill. There is a different phonics activity for each digital notebook. You can assign the same phonics activity to all your students or provide them with the activity that develops a phonics skill they need to work on.

    Language Skills Activity

    Each week students complete a fun Google Slides activity on a specific language skill. There is a different language activity for each digital notebook. You can assign the same language activity to all your students or provide them with the activity that develops a language skill they need to work on.

    Vocabulary Word of the Day

    There are five digital “word of the day” Google Slides included for each digital notebook. Students complete one Google Slide on a different vocabulary word each day of the week.

    Sentence Writing

    A sentence writing activity is included for each digital notebook. The sentence writing activities focus on a variety of different editing and revising skills.

    Inquiry Question of the Day

    There are five digital inquiry “question of the day” Google Slides included for each digital notebook. Students complete one inquiry question each day of the week.

    Writing Activity

    Each week a writing activity is included in each digital notebook. The activity develops the narrative, opinion, or informative writing skills of students. Self, peer and teacher assessments are also included.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Why are there three levels of digital notebooks?

    Our classrooms are filled with students that have different learning needs. There are three levels of digital notebooks so you can choose the notebook that best meets the individual needs of each student in your class. The notebooks all have a similar theme so all students are working on the same topic at the same time. The notebooks are set up so that Level A is aligned with the Grade 1 common core standards, Level B with the Grade 2 common core standards, and Level C with the Grade 3 common core standards. However, as not all our students require their current grade level programming, please check out the activities in all three notebooks.

    What do the colored boxes on the teaching plan mean?

    The colored boxes mean there are no activities assigned for that day. There are daily journal writing prompts, vocabulary word activities, and inquiry questions. There is one phonics, language, and writing activity for each week. These activities are introduced on different days throughout the week and students can work on them throughout the week.

    Background Information:

    When COVID arrived and school went online I resolved to find a way to teach writing to kids online. I brainstormed what kids needed to achieve their writing goals and through trial and error figured out how to support students to achieve these goals using digital writing activities.

    I spent hours and hours adding and changing and tweaking until I had a weekly writing program I believed would move kids forward and help them become better writers. The Digital Writing Fast Lane is the weekly writing program I created.

    As not all the students in our classrooms learn the same way or have the same learning needs, I wanted to differentiate the program so students could work on activities to develop the skills they needed. As a result I created three different digital notebooks for each week of the program.

    My goal in creating the Digital Writing Fast Lane program is to make the lives of teachers easier. I want teachers to be able to focus their attention on their students rather than spending time stressing over what to teach next or finding the “perfect” digital resource to use in their next writing lesson.
