Digraph Train Cards - Phoneme Segmentation
This printable file has pages to print and create 26 phoneme segmentation cards that will motivate and encourage your students to learn to write and/or build words with consonant digraphs - ch, sh, th and wh.
They are PERFECT for giving students that essential confidence when they begin to learn their first 'tricky sounds'. I have selected only words that are phonetically regular (so they can be sounded-out). They use only single sounds, short vowels, blends and the focus digraphs. So students are only having to access knowledge they already have, plus the additional new content (the digraphs).
The fun train theme will help them to develop a conceptual understanding of building a word and 'listening' for the sounds from start to finish in order. It also greatly assists with helping students understand that 2 letters make a digraph, but they make a totally new single sound - so the two letters sit together on one carriage of the train.
The cards feature a range of ccvc and cvcc words, covering all the major double consonant blends.
Once laminated, children can look at the picture, say the word, stretch it out and build the word. Use letter tiles (a page is provided to make your own), magnetic letters or a dry erase marker.
Students can also write the words on the worksheets provided!
These cards will be perfect for small group activities or literacy centers.
