I created this activity for my first graders who understand the value of pennies and dimes and were ready for an extension activity. Students will learn to use an organized list to find the number of ways various amounts of money can be shown using just dimes and pennies. They will relate this to the place value representation in tens and ones, and see the patterns created when dimes are traded for pennies. Students will go from using the coins to model their thinking to predicting the coin representations. I hope your students enjoy this activity as much as mine did!
