Using simple images in rows (maximum of 5 in a row) students will quickly learn to recognise up to 25, WITHOUT COUNTING. The eye can be taught to subtilise five easily, hence the beauty of using images in rows of 5! Start by showing just the first 5 slides in order, then the first 5 slides in random order. Students should be encouraged to say how many there are without counting. Once the first 5 slides are mastered, slowly introduce the next 5. Done regularly, students will be learning many incidental addition and subtraction facts, they will be consolidating counting by 5s and consolidating bonds of 10 and 20 and counting on. When students are asked, e.g. How do you know that there are 23 without counting? Even very young students, will typically respond with, 'I know that 4 rows of 5 are 20, then I counted on; 21, 22, 23!' or, 'I know that 5 rows are 25, so I counted backwards; 24, 23!' Simple, yet highly effective!
