Long before students are exposed to the standard algorithm for adding 2-digit numbers, they should have extensive hands-on experience adding numbers with manipulatives (direct modeling). Working with base-ten blocks helps students understand the place value concepts behind regrouping using the standard algorithm. This activity is designed to give scaffolded practice with increasingly larger numbers.
Students can play two different versions of Roll, Build, and Add with either a printed recording sheet or using interactive Google Slides™. The digital version includes an embedded video explaining how to use the resource. Please note that for either version, students will need a die to generate the numbers. Base ten blocks are recommended for the print version. Moveable base ten blocks are provided in the digital version.
✔ Two versions of a printable recording sheet to scaffold the activity
✔ Digital version of the recording sheets with movable base ten blocks for use with Google Classroom™!
WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING...
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "My students loved using the resources found in this unit. The model for 2-digit addition allowed my students to fully understand the concept." Melissa M.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Having students represent the addends with base ten blocks helps them compose and decompose numbers beyond identifying the value of each digit and helps them understand compensation. " Michelle L.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "This was perfect for what I was teaching my students. It provides scaffolding and allows students to gradually learn with manipulatives. Directions were clear and easy to follow for students. Thank you for sharing." Joann B.
