Instead of lecturing my students about direct variation functions, as I used to do in the past, I start my class with a "mini-lesson" on the topic of direct variation functions: what is so difficult about them is that they are just so simple: y = (some number) * x.
Students really struggle with the concept that the answer to most direct variation problems is an equation, not just a number. I do two or three examples, and then I set them to task with this worksheet.
I use this activity within cooperative groups, and I circulate to make sure they are getting the purpose of the questions.
