PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a great interactive activity for the classroom, which reinforces concepts of Direct Variation and demonstrates applications to real world concepts, while integrating critical thinking. The first page serves as notes for the students. Students will actively define direct variation from their textbook and then make their own meaning of that term. The instructor can review the definition and fill out the additional notes to their discretion.

Some practice problems are provided to reinforce the concepts for students. The Pay Day activity serves as a real life connection and application for students regarding direct variation, especially for students who plan to attend college and choose a career path. The instructor can assign groups or allow students to choose. Each group is assigned to one profession. Students will make predictions regarding different occupational salaries. Money is attached (must be printed and cut). The salary page is for the instructor's reference only

Money will be organized into three different envelopes per occupation. One envelope represents one payday. There are a total of three pay days. Total hours worked are different for each payday. One representative from each group will collect their money three separate times (from the instructor). Each collection represents one pay day. Students will bring the envelope containing the money to their group members and count the money. Then students will complete the chart. X will represent the number of hours they worked and Y will represent the total income for that pay day.

Once the chart is completed, students will use information in their chart to determine the constant, k and the equation for direct variation. Students will answer guiding questions to further depend content understanding and application of direct variation.
