This assignment was inspired by the director's commentary feature you often find in DVD extra features. We often ask students to discuss "the effect of" such and such a device in other people's writing. For this assignment, students will write a short story and then add a director's commentary section after the story. I include a list of eligible short-story devices and ask my students to include and discuss "the effect" of ten devices. To illustrate what I want, we read "Saving Sourdi" by May-Lee Chai and they read my own commentary for this short story.
What you get--
1. Link to "Saving Sourdi"
2. Assignment Description with list of short-story devices
3. My model director's commentary for "Saving Sourdi"
Below is the opening description to the assignment.
For this assignment you will not only write a short story but also comment--like a director’s commentary on a DVD extra-feature. First, take a look at the list below. Your job is to include in your short story and then discuss on a separate page at least ten of these literary devices. These devices all contribute to understanding the theme of your story. I have illustrated below what I’d like you to do with the short story “Saving Sourdi” by May-Lee Chai.
