Description

Build reading comprehension, writing skills, and subject knowledge with these writing tasks, inspired by Judith Hochman and Natalie Wexler’s The Writing Revolution.

This bundle contains sentence-writing tasks about Colony Collapse Disorder, the mysterious condition that is causing bees to disappear. Students can start with correcting run-on sentences in a paragraph and writing questions about the topic, move on to building the range of sentence types they can write by practicing using conjunctions and appositives, and finally practice writing more complex sentences in the sentence combining tasks. This resource could also be used for differentiating writing tasks as students learn about the same content.

This resource includes both printable worksheets, and a PowerPoint file (which can be uploaded to Google Classroom) with text boxes students can fill in, suitable for distance learning. An answer key is included.

These activities are based on the article “Why Are Honeybees Vanishing?” available for free on CommonLit, but they could also be used with other resources about Colony Collapse Disorder, if similar content is covered.

These tasks could be used as ELA nonfiction reading practice, or for bringing some content-focused literacy work into your science classes.
