This is a 33 slide, highly animated, power point presentations on Disasters & Events that Shaped America - The Donner Party Expedition. Each of the presentation slides are editable so you can change it to fit your individual needs.

In the spring of 1846, a group of nearly 90 emigrants left Springfield, IL, and headed west on the 2,500 mile journey to CA, in what would become one of the greatest tragedies in the history of westward migration. Led by brothers Jacob & George Donner, the group attempted to take a new and supposedly shorter route to California.

James Reed, originator of the group, had recently read the book The Emigrants’ Guide to Oregon and California, by Landsford Hastings, who advertised a new shortcut across the Great Basin that would save the pioneers 350-400 miles on easy terrain. What Reed did not know was that the Hastings Route had never been tested. It was this falsified information that would lead to the doom of the Donner Party.

In the end, there was no shortcut. The party left too late in the year to make it over the mountains and became snowbound. Running out of food and to keep from starving, many in the group resorted to cannibalism.

In the Donner Party tragedy, two-thirds of the men in the party perished, while two-thirds of the women and children lived. 41 individuals died, and 46 survived. In the end, 5 had died before reaching the mountains, 35 perished either at the mountain camps or trying to cross the mountains, and 1 died just after reaching the valley. Many of those who survived lost toes to frostbite.
