As teachers we strive to meet each student's learning needs at their level. Some students come in below level, on level, or above level. Now what? This progression guide/steps allows you to see what the first grade standard is and the correlating standards are for the grade level before and after are. This allow us plan for differentiation. You can see what below level students are missing from the year before to "fill the gap" and see what is expected at the "next step" to challenge your advanced students. These First grade common core "steps" were created according to the K-3 Common Core Vertical Progression Guide created by Battelle. There is a word document/set of steps for every common core language arts standard in first grade. Also pdf altogether in book format ready to print. You can also use them to give students a visual of what the steps are so they are aware of what needs to be mastered before they can move to the next step or standard in the sequence. Students can then move to the next step once they are proficient or advanced on a particular step. Steps are available in word format so they can be used in individual data notebooks or for teacher class record. Each student's name can be placed above the step they are on. Math steps also included with sequential steps for teaching first grade math (includes all first grade common core standards) in all areas including addition, subtraction, counting sequence, time place value, fluency, organizing data, fractions, properties, expressions, equalities, inequalities shapes, and properties.
