Prerequisite Skills: This activity is intended to be used after students know how to graph with t-tables and count slope between two points on a graph.
Objective: Students will be able to discover that when an equation is in y=mx+b (slope-intercept) form, m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
Directions: Hand each student in the class one graphing task (12 different tasks are included, allowing for differentiation). Allow students time to complete the task, then hang their graph up in the room. Have students circulate the room and look carefully at each equation, graph, and slope and intercept. A class discussion should follow, as students notice that the slope is the coefficient of x and the y-intercept is the constant.
