Use this lesson to engage your students in calculating surface area in a real-world context.
Students work in teams to calculate the surface area of various packaging. This allows them to have something tangible to work with, and to see where the formula or other methods for calculating surface area come from! My students love this lesson, and often say it is what they remember most because it was hands-on learning.
This lesson/activity should be an introductory lesson to Surface Area. Students should only need to understand that surface area is the total area surrounding a 3-dimensional object, like wrapping paper on a gift!
There is also an optional extension idea included!
