Here’s a fun way to learn the Dewey Decimal System using QR (Quick Response) codes. Sixteen Dewey Decimal Number Cards each feature a nonfiction 3-digit call number, subject name, and picture to represent the subject. Each number card has a matching Dewey Decimal QR Code Card with the same picture and a QR code that “hides” the 3-digit call number and subject name. Students use QR readers/scanning devices to reveal the hidden numbers and subjects as they discover the Dewey Decimal System through five different activities. The 32 card set comes with centers activity cards and materials, plus one large group activity sheet. Activities include: Hunting for “Secret Codes,” Dewey Number Order, Guess My Dewey, Dewey Memory Match, and Dewey Hide and Seek. The Dewey Decimal Number Cards and Dewey Decimal QR Code Cards can also be posted on the library’s nonfiction shelves throughout the year to help students independently locate books about those topics. Students will enjoy using the QR codes to explore and learn how the Dewey Decimal System works in your library.
