In the past, I used to lecture my students about the distance formula, and I was never satisfied, because they really didn't understand it in terms of the Pythagorean Theorem.
Over time, I started to shift to having them discover the formula, but the problem is that I was still very lecture-focused: most students would watch me go over every step in excruciating detail, and when it was their turn to perform, there were just a few minutes left in class.
I think this worksheet strikes a happy balance: though I start class with a 15-minute mini-lesson to give them the basics, the bulk of the block is spent with them working through the problems. The worksheet does also include the formula in a gray reference section, so those who straggle, those who were absent, or those who just need to check their work have something to refer to.
I use this activity within cooperative groups, and I circulate to make sure they are getting the purpose of the questions.
