Students discover the rules of 0, 1, and negative exponents by looking at patterns of positive exponents with a base of 2. They fill in tables of numbers, look for patterns, write a rule, and then test it on a base number of their choice.
An answer key is included.
I have used this project with 8th and 7th graders. It is a great way for students to conceptualize the rules of exponents. I have had students work on it independently or with a partner. It worked well both ways.
