In this pre-reading activity students discover the genre of Science Fiction in film. This is a pre-teaching, self discovery lesson prior to teaching and reading science fiction.
Students watch 3 episodes from 2 popular Science Fiction TV series (totaling about 95 minutes) and complete a variety of higher-order reflection questions independently in order to find the common characteristics of most science fiction.
They then write a journal prompt based on their findings. A class discussion should also follow.
This bundle contains 1) the handout students need while they are watching the episodes which includes the questions and 2) the journal prompt they should answer after watching all media and answering all reflection questions.
*You will need Netflix or other streaming service to do this activity. Currently, all episodes presented are on Netflix, some can also be found on Youtube.* Shows are "The Twilight Zone" and "Stranger Things". Each episode was chosen carefully to depict the qualities of true Science Fiction media.
*Content might be mature for middle school grades. It is advised you watch all episodes yourself before showing them to students to determine if they are appropriate for your class.* This was used in a 10th grade Resource Room (Special Education) setting.
