Our district adopted the Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook this year, found on the DiscoveryEd online portal. As the trainers for this Techbook even say, it is "not a curriculum" but rather "a resource." To that end, my colleagues and I have had to create a variety of worksheets to support the activities in the Techbook as well as quiz questions for reading passages that can be uploaded to Socrative or Kahoots or even used on Google Forms. Some of the resources have been retyped from the original pdf format into a Word doc or spreadsheet with minor format and directions changes. ALL resources I have created are for Grade 7, World Geography chapters TO ACCOMPANY the DiscoveryEd online Techbook. There is no direct text from the chapters themselves. For that, you will need an account with Discovery Education.
This particular resource connects to Grade 7 World Geography Techbook Chapter 4.4, the Maastricht Treaty.
In this assessment, the students explore the concept behind the treaty within context. The world wars had just torn Europe to pieces and the continent was in desperate need of alliances in order to face the future and rebuild. This assignment maps out some of the ideas from the treaty, and asks students to consider whether it was effective or not.
For this assignment, we ran a Socratic Circle after Day 1's reading, before going back to begin the writing portion. Additionally, we showed a few media clips from the world wars (through Discovery Education) in order to build some background knowledge.
At the end of the assignment, I've also attached all my notes, including my highlighted copy and a model essay I wrote for the assignment.
