Our district adopted the Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook this year, found on the DiscoveryEd online portal. As the trainers for this Techbook even say, it is "not a curriculum" but rather "a resource." To that end, my colleagues and I have had to create a variety of worksheets to support the activities in the Techbook as well as quiz questions for reading passages that can be uploaded to Socrative or Kahoots or even used on Google Forms. Some of the resources have been retyped from the original pdf format into a Word doc or spreadsheet with minor format and directions changes. ALL resources I have created are for Grade 7, World Geography chapters TO ACCOMPANY the DiscoveryEd online Techbook. There is no direct text from the chapters themselves. For that, you will need an account with Discovery Education.
This particular resource connects to Grade 7 World Geography Techbook Chapter 4.4, Ancient Governments.
In this assessment, the students explore the concept of government is a more broad way. First, I boiled down several documents for them to work with including a brief version of Democracy in Ancient Greece, the Declaration of Independence in brief version, and the Constitution, essentially in bullet points. I ran it in a Jigsaw group, but the information could be disseminated in a variety of ways.
Then, I asked the students to compare and contrast what Greece's idea of governing really was versus the U.S. Founding Fathers. As per our curriculum, the students had to end with a writing piece, however, the brainstorm work and the class discussion surrounding the concepts was well worth the time, even if there had not been an essay at the end. Many of the students mentioned that they had heard the U.S. government was based on Greek ideas, but seeing exactly how that transpired was good for them. Additionally, several of them had never seen the Declaration or Constitution, so that too was worthwhile.
I have included all three of my version of the texts as well as the assignment. The original of this assignment can be found in the Discovery Education Techbook in Chapter 4.4.
