Our district adopted the Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook this year, found on the DiscoveryEd online portal. As the trainers for this Techbook even say, it is "not a curriculum" but rather "a resource." To that end, my colleagues and I have had to create a variety of worksheets to support the activities in the Techbook as well as quiz questions for reading passages that can be uploaded to Socrative or Kahoots or even used on Google Forms. Some of the resources have been retyped from the original pdf format into a Word doc or spreadsheet with minor format and directions changes. ALL resources I have created are for Grade 7, World Geography chapters TO ACCOMPANY the DiscoveryEd online Techbook. There is no direct text from the chapters themselves. For that, you will need an account with Discovery Education.
This particular resource connects to Grade 7 World Geography Techbook Chapter 6.1. A huge part of our Standards Based Report cards in SS is the written response. For 7th graders, that refers to the Short Constructed Response in science and social studies. To that end, we expanded the assessment listed in Ch. 4.3 regarding inventions to be graded against the writing standards.
In this assessment, the students explore resources, including poems related to the Dead Sea and the Maghreb. They then use the Techbook to answer some basic questions about the physicality of these two desert regions. Finally, the students write a Short Response essay to answer this persuasive prompt:
How would you compare and contrast the Maghreb region and the Dead Sea region in terms of their physical environment, resources and economic activity? Be sure to support your answer with cited evidence.
This assignment can NOT be done independently of Discovery Education. The Techbook is required for the assignment to make sense.
