Product Description
How did the murder of a 14 year old boy influence African American society and the Civil Rights Movement? Emmett Till, a Black youngster from Chicago, would visit his uncle in Mississippi in 1955 expecting a summer vacation of fun. Instead, it turned tragic as Emmett was suspected of a controversial action in the racist Deep South and found dead along a riverbank. Despite the extreme brutality and racism, Emmett's mother would turn the murder of her son into a watershed moment in the Civil Rights Movement.

Throughout the lesson students will:

1) Respond to a Bell Ringer in which students will try to guess the age and cause of death based on the image of Emmett Till's corpse.

2) Watch a free online documentary about the murder of Emmett Till and subsequent trial while answering related questions.

3) Create an obituary for Emmett Till that not only explains his personal characteristics and details of Emmett's death, but also the impact that it had on the Civil Rights Movement.
